How to Measure Your Head
- Grab a soft measuring tape or a piece of string (like twine or a shoelace) and a ruler or measuring tool
- Wrap a soft tape or string around your head to measure about 1/4 to 1/2 inch above your ear and about 3/4 to an 1" inch above your brow line (see image)
- Mark the tape or your string, where it intersects, with your finger.
- Record your measurement in inches or centimeters (centimeters is often more accurate)
- If you're using a string, run it along side the ruler as many times as necessary to get a complete measurement
- MEASURE AGAIN!
- Always measure more than once until you get the same number twice
- Find your size in the chart for the perfect fit

After being so impressed with my first American Hat Makers hat, I knew I wanted to add another to the collection. This Cattleman in Chocolate Brown did not disappoint.
The felt quality is excellent right out of the box and holds its shape well, while still allowing enough flexibility to customize it to your own style. I’ve spent time shaping the brim and crown to fit the look I was after, and the hat responded perfectly.
I’ve worn it while working, around town, and outdoors, and it’s quickly become one of my favorite hats. The craftsmanship, comfort, and durability are exactly what I was hoping for. It has the look of a classic western hat but is comfortable enough to wear all day.
If you’re looking for a quality felt cowboy hat that you can truly make your own, I highly recommend this one. It definitely won’t be my last American Hat Makers purchase.

Chocolate size medium for me. The hat crown was too round for my head but was easy to fix and fit perfectly after stretching fo get the perfect oval shape.
The hat had a dark stain on the crown that I didn’t notice until after I altered the fit so I can’t exchange it.
I attached a picture and the stain is right in front of the hatband buckle. Overall I really like the hat.
