- Grab a soft measuring tape or a piece of string (like twine or a shoelace) and a ruler or measuring tool
- Wrap a soft tape or string around your head to measure about 1/4 to 1/2 inch above your ear and about 3/4 to an 1" inch above your brow line (see image)
- Mark the tape or your string, where it intersects, with your finger.
- Record your measurement in inches or centimeters (centimeters is often more accurate)
- If you're using a string, run it along side the ruler as many times as necessary to get a complete measurement
- MEASURE AGAIN!
- Always measure more than once until you get the same number twice
- Find your size in the chart for the perfect fit

Although I own nearly a dozen hats of various styles, I wanted a replica of the sand colored western hat that Timothy Olyphant wore playing Raylan Givens in the FX tv series, "Justified". (He's pictured in character below.) The original was patterned after the defunct Stetson Marshall hat and manufactured by Baron Hats in LA. The RG sells for $1,250 -- a bit too rich for me. I came across AHM's Cattleman hat and knew I could work with it. Not only is the Cattleman top quality at a good price, it comes in my 7 7/8 hat size. It was relatively easy to steam and flatten the 4-inch brim, then cut an inch off with a Brim Cutter. I replaced the hat band with an embossed leather band. After a bit of steaming and working the 3-inch brim and applying some hat stiffener, viola! It's a faithful replica of Rayan's hat. (The images below don't capture the true color of the Cattleman, but the final product shot next to Raylan's image is quite accurate.)
This makeover could only be done with a good quality western felt hat like the Cattleman. AHM makes some fine hats, are good people to work with, and because they offer the large 7 7/8 size I need, I'm sure to be ordering others in the future. I highly recommend doing business with them.

I love this hat. It’s exactly what I expected. Love the color and the fit. The creases aren’t nearly as straight as I’d like, but they do add personal touch and makes it one of a kind. Great hat for a great price in my opinion.

I have a head size that most hat makers deny the existence of - a size 7 7/8 to 8. This means that I am largely unable to find hats anywhere. They just are like unicorns, so when I found American hat makers sized up to my head and incredibly, Beyond, I was ecstatic and gave it a try. Boy am I glad I did. I just ordered three more hats from them because the quality and design of the Hat I ordered far exceeded my expectations.

The Cattleman Cowboy Hat is a great. The fit is perfect, the color is great. The only negative thing I can say is my rim was bent on delivery. I will have to take it to a local Hat company to get it fixed.
