The History of the Cowboy Hat

If you can recall anything from your high school history courses, the Westward Expansion of America was covered in detail. Even while men began to migrate westward in the early 1800s, Manifest Destiny didn't really take hold until the decade that followed the Civil War. The original cowboys imitated the attire of the Vaqueros who had been riding the plains before them when they came in the first wave. Many cowboys in historical photographs are wearing sombreros.

They began shaking things up by donning bowler hats, sometimes known as derby hats, in 1849. They were "the thing" until the first cowboy hat was created by a Pennsylvania-based hat manufacturer. They were created in England by Thomas and William Bowler for the hatters Lock & Co Hatters. This cowboy hat, often known as "The Boss of the Plains," was designed by Stetson in 1865. Stetson is still associated with cowboy hats today.

That hat didn't resemble the style known as "The Cattleman." Only because of a cowboy in a movie did that type of cowboy hat become the most popular. Tom Mix was the first cowboy movie star in Hollywood, and Stetson created his cowboy hat. The crown features three wrinkles, and the brim is slightly bent. And the Tom Mix cowboy hat is still available today.

The Cowboy Hat and Pop Culture

Men's cowboy hats and boots are both regaining popularity, along with men's cowboy hats. Why now, though? Believe it or not, this street style was captured during fashion month, when everyone wore items with a cowboy theme from Milan to New York City.

In recent years, the LGBTQ+ community, as well as the viral Yeehaw movement, have both contributed to the hat's resurgence in popularity. Following the release of "Ole Town Road," Lil Nas X made them appear very fashionable, and films like "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" and television programs like "Yellowstone" demonstrate how simple (and stylish) it is to wear them.

Pop culture has changed because of Diplo and Post Malone's affinity for the nude suit and Instagram profiles that depict Americana from a Black perspective.

Men's Western boots are becoming increasingly popular outside of regions like the Deep South and Texas because to the resurgence of interest in Americana. Invest in a Western-style cowboy hat, a real men's fashion trend since 2019. If you're interested in this trend but think that denim shirts and Cuban-heel boots are too subdued for you.
